Initial Experience of PBL Class at OCAmerica HS focusing on Training of Innovation, Critical Thinking and Interdisciplinary Capabilities
On the afternoon of December 24, 2017, and also on the eve of Christmas Day, the foreign teachers at Orange County American High School of Beijing Foreign Studies University (" OCAmerica HS BFSU ") were not so busy with holiday preparations as they had been in previous years, instead, they were "performing" an authentic experience class integrated with exploration and fun, which highlighted the teaching characteristics of OCAmerica HS BFSU.
Adam, Vice President of the headquarter office of OCAmerica HS in China, first addressed the students and parents who attended the Open Class. Adam pointed out that studying abroad had now entered the 4.0 era: "In the 1.0 era, it was mainly about language examination training and document application services. In the 2.0 era, based on the 1.0 service, international understanding was added to the service, additionally some more cultural knowledge in history, geography, religion and cultural customs was also added, to help the kids understand the unknown world. In the 3.0 era, the content of academic courses, such as AP, A-level and IB, were added on the basis of 2.0, which had begun to pave the way for the high school and university educations in the way of international courses, which was the mainstream mode of the first-line and some second-tier international schools. In the next 5 years, the coming internationalized education 4.0 era will be aiming at building a capacity framework system to face up with the goal of 21st century. By means of the advanced education approach of STEAM education, with the students' independent development as the core of personalized education, we can realize the joint rail with the advanced educations in foreign countries of our domestic international education, so as to complete the seamless interconnection between the domestic high school educations and the higher educations in the United States.
The curriculum of OCAmerica HS BFSU was designed based on the requirement of education in the 4.0 era of studying abroad. Let's go to the American class at OCAmerica HS, and start a trip of fun learning.
Training of Innovative Thinking in the Experience of American Classroom at OCAmerica HS
"Teacher-guided (distinguished from the teacher-dominated) -interactive learning (distinguished from the teacher's pure teaching and the students' pure learning)- fun motivating (different from the boring traditional classroom teaching)- the students' active learning (different from the students' passive learning)" have all been represented in the unique classroom style by Denys, a famous foreign teacher at OCAmerica HS BFSU. After experiencing Denys' training course in innovative thinking, Wang said: "it is completely different from traditional foreign language courses. There is no single word, phrase or sentence taught through rote memorization of the students. Instead, the students can acquire knowledge, memorize and strengthen their memories of words through small classroom activities. This is unprecedented in traditional classrooms. (No word can describe how much fun in Denys' classroom teaching. Fortunately, a video of the class can be a proof, any students who are interested, please follow the WeChat public platform of OCAmerica HS BFSU and ask for the fun video.)
Initial Experience of PBL Project Learning focusing on the Training of Interdisciplinary Learning Capabilities
If Denis' classroom teaching has been good enough to arouse the students' enthusiasm about learning, then the exploratory learning method of Nathan, another famous teacher from OCAmerica HS BFSU, has also greatly stimulated the interests and participation of the students.
This course is based on the STEAM featured curriculum of OCAmerica HS BFSU, Nathan adopted four primary STEAM projects: Hands & Paper, The impending “Arch Bridge”, Water Wheel, and Paper flowers Blooming in the Water. In the one and a half hours' experience class, the students divided into groups, the teacher guided and the parents observed, the whole thing was a lot of fun. (The same with Denys' teaching, we have videos in this section. Students who feel interested, please follow the WeChat public platform number of OCAmerica HS BFSU, and ask for the video.)
STEAM education is not only an advanced education concept, but also an in-depth learning method based on learning progression. In the final conclusion, Ken (Senior Education Expert, Senior Certified Teacher of American public school, Senior Principal Assistant of OCAmerica HS) introduced the practical situation of STEAM education in American classrooms, and made a deep comparison of the differences between Chinese and American classroom teachings, and pointed out that STEAM education would be the main direction of education development in the future.
